Octagonal vs. Oval RTJ Gaskets: Which to Choose?

Octagonal Gaskets

The Octagonal RTJ Gasket is the modern standard. Its straight-edged sealing surfaces provide higher sealing efficiency than the oval profile. It is preferred for new equipment and higher pressure ratings due to the concentrated force on the sealing faces.

Oval Gaskets

The Oval RTJ Gasket was the original design. It is versatile because it can fit both the modern flat-bottomed groove and the older round-bottomed groove. It is primarily used today for maintenance of older piping systems and flanges.
