Indian Origin AB1: The Foundational High-Strength Aluminum Bronze

AB1 is an Aluminium Bronze conforming to the requirements of BS 1400. It has good strength and wear resistance with reasonable machining properties. AB1 resists tarnishing and high temperature oxidation. These physical properties remain good at elevated temperatures. General corrosion resistance is good but under some circumstances may suffer dealuminification. Aluminium Bronze is often chosen for pump applications where impeller peripheral velocity is high (up to 45m/sec).

A nickel-free aluminium bronze with 10% aluminium and 3% iron which provides additional strength and acts as a grain refiner. The composition meets the requirements of the British standard BS 1400 AB1 CuAl10Fe3 and the European standard BS EN 1982-2008 GC CC331G CuAl10Fe2-C. The alloy has good abrasion resistance and can be used for slow moving parts under high loads but need adequate lubrication. It is also used in sea water application and has moderate resistance in non-oxidising mineral acids and alkalis, is good with organic acids and boiler feed water. The alloy can also be manufactured to ASTM B 505 C95200, DIN 1714 W Nr 2.0940.03, NF A 53-709 CuAl10Fe3 Y70, JIS H 5121 CAC701 Class 1 and SIS 145710- 5710.

Aluminum Bronze AB1 — Frequently Asked Questions

AB1 is a high-strength aluminum bronze alloy valued for its superior corrosion and erosion resistance, high mechanical strength, and excellent anti-galling properties, making it resilient in heavy-load and corrosive industrial environments.

The key difference is the Nickel content. The AB1 shown here has a Nickel maximum of 1.0% (closer to UNS C95400/C95200), while C95500 is a dedicated Nickel Aluminum Bronze with 3.0-5.5% Nickel, offering even higher strength and resilience in naval applications.

BS 1400 AB1 is generally equivalent in application and similar in chemistry to ASTM B148 C95400 and EN 1982 CuAl10Fe3. While no standard is an exact match due to minor differences in tolerance, these grades represent the same family of high-strength, low-nickel aluminum bronzes.

Yes, due to its high strength and good integrity when cast, Aluminum Bronze AB1 is often specified for pressure-containing parts and pressure vessel components, particularly in marine and chemical environments where corrosion resistance is paramount.
