ASTM A351 CF8 Valves — Frequently Asked Questions

ASTM A351 CF8 is Cast Stainless Steel, the most common austenitic grade, corresponding to Wrought 304 SS. It is used for general corrosion resistance in non-chloride and moderate temperature environments. Its primary composition includes 18-21% Chromium and 8-11% Nickel.

CF8 (max 0.08% Carbon) is susceptible to sensitization and intergranular corrosion if held in the 425°C to 815°C temperature range for too long, as occurs during welding. If welding is required and post-weld solution annealing is impossible, the low-carbon variant, CF3 (Cast 304L), is generally preferred to maintain corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone.

CF8M (Cast 316/316L) contains Molybdenum, while CF8 (Cast 304) does not. Molybdenum dramatically improves resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and attack from chloride and reducing acid environments. CF8 is suitable for general service, whereas CF8M is for severe corrosion service.

CF8 is suitable for a wide range of temperatures, from cryogenic service (down to -196°C) up to a non-pressure containment limit of around 650°C (1200°F). However, the pressure-temperature rating for CF8 is limited by ASME B16.34 to 454°C (850°F) in some classes, and its use above 425°C should be reviewed due to potential carbide precipitation.
