Established in 2009, we are an ISO 9001:2015 certified firm based in Mumbai, India, recognized as the leading Ring Type Joint (RTJ) Gaskets manufacturer in Mumbai and a top API 6A/17D certified exporter in India. We specialize in robust, metallic RTJ Gaskets, specifically designed to provide exceptionally effective and reliable sealing in environments characterized by extremely high pressures (up to 20,000 psi), severe temperatures (from cryogenic to 800°C+), and highly corrosive chemical media. Our precision-engineered RTJ gaskets are absolutely crucial for ensuring leak-free operation, enhanced safety, and long-term integrity in critical piping systems and process equipment, particularly within the petroleum industry.

Our RTJ Gaskets are expertly machined from various high-quality metals to precise dimensions and surface finishes, ensuring optimal interaction with specially grooved flanges. The sealing action is achieved by the initial line contact between the gasket and the flange groove, followed by the "wedging" effect and plastic deformation of the softer gasket material into the harder flange material when bolt loads are applied. This creates an incredibly strong, high-integrity, and pressure-energized seal. Dipti Metal offers a comprehensive portfolio that includes R, RX, and BX type RTJ gaskets, available in an extensive range of metallic grades, to meet the exacting and dynamic demands of critical sectors such as oil & gas exploration and production (upstream, midstream, downstream), petrochemical refining, power generation, offshore drilling platforms, and heavy chemical processing industries. We provide custom-manufactured RTJ gaskets alongside all international standard dimensions and specifications, ensuring optimal fit, maximum performance, and full compliance for every critical application worldwide. Our RTJ gaskets are typically manufactured and certified to industry standards such as API 6A, API 17D, and ASME B16.20. For other metallic sealing solutions, visit our Solid Metal Gaskets page.

1. Types of Ring Type Joint Gaskets:

These are the foundational RTJ gaskets, manufactured in accordance with ASME B16.20 or API 6A. They create a seal by the compressive force causing the gasket material to plastically deform into and fill the micro-fine imperfections of the flange groove.

  • Shapes:
    • Oval Cross-Section: The original R-type design.
    • Octagonal Cross-Section: The modern preferred R-type design, offering more efficient sealing. Both oval and octagonal types are interchangeable on modern octagonal-type grooved flanges.
  • Applications: Suitable for API 6A flanges up to 5,000 psi and ASME B16.5 / B16.47 flanges up to Pressure Class 2500. Primarily used in the oil field on drilling and completion equipment, valves, and pipework assemblies.
  • Recommendation: As with all solid metal Ring Type Joints, it is recommended to replace the ring when the flanged connection is broken.

An adaptation of the standard Style R, the RX gasket is a pressure-activated gasket with a slightly different cross-section. It features a larger contact area and is designed to take advantage of the internal system pressure, which acts upon its unique profile, enhancing the sealing force as pressure increases. It incorporates a pressure passage hole to prevent pressure lock.

  • Applications: Designed to fit the same groove design as a standard Style R, making the joints interchangeable (though consideration should be given to the difference in finished make-up distance). Specifically for API 6A flanges from 2,000 psi to 10,000 psi and ASME B16.5 / B16.47 flanges up to Pressure Class 5000. Offers improved sealing at higher pressures.

The BX gasket is a fully pressure-energized, all-metal seal designed for extremely high pressures, manufactured in accordance with ASME B16.20, API 6A, and API 17D. It relies on a metal-to-metal seal where the system pressure acts on the exposed face of the gasket, pushing it against the flange groove, thereby augmenting the sealing force. When correctly fitted, it allows virtual face-to-face contact of the flange faces, fully confining the gasket. All BX gaskets incorporate a pressure balance hole to ensure equalization of pressure which may be generated in the grooves.

  • Applications: Exclusively designed for API 6A Type 6BX flanges, typically used for pressure ratings from 10,000 psi up to 20,000 psi. These are critical seals for wellhead and blowout preventer applications.

2. Metallic Materials & Grades for RTJ Gaskets:

The selection of the gasket material is critical and must be softer than the flange material to allow for proper deformation without damaging the flange. Our RTJ gaskets are available in a vast array of high-quality metals, each chosen for its specific mechanical, thermal, and corrosion resistance properties. Materials are supplied to NACE specifications upon request.

Specialized Ring Type Joint (RTJ) Gaskets for Critical & Non-Standard Applications

Beyond the standard R, RX, and BX types, Dipti Metal offers a range of specialized RTJ solutions for unique challenges, often found in the oil & gas and petrochemical industries, ensuring optimal performance even in the most demanding conditions.

Designed for use in subsea wellhead, mudline, and tree equipment. To distinguish subsea RTJs, the suffix "S" is applied, indicating additional pressure passage holes in the ring cross-section. This is mandatory to prevent pressure lock when connections are assembled underwater. API 17D provides two drilling options for these holes: Option A and Option B.

  • SBX Style: Other than the addition of pressure passage holes, all physical aspects of the API 17D SBX Ring Type Joint are the same as the API 6A BX Ring Type Joint.
  • (Note: API 17D no longer supports the use of SRX ring type joints (API 6A RX Ring Type Joints with subsea drillings); however, for opening flanges on existing equipment, replacement SRX Ring Type Joints may still be used.)

These are combination rings consisting of two different sizes having the same pitch circle diameter. They are used for sealing RTJ flanges where the mating flanges have different ring groove geometry.

  • Materials: Can be manufactured from standard materials, as well as exotic alloys.
  • Note: Transition RTJs are available with either oval or octagonal facings and are not encompassed within the API or ASME specifications, requiring custom engineering.
  • Blind RTJ: Used to blank off flanges and pipework. They consist of standard RTJs with integral solid metal centers. The height of the standard RTJ section is increased to allow the solid center to fit between the flanges and permit correct seating.
  • Orifice RTJ: Used for restricting and/or measuring fluid flow. Sized to customer requirements, with the RTJ section height increased to accommodate the orifice plate thickness.
  • Materials: Can be supplied in all standard and exotic materials.
  • Note: Blind / Blank thicknesses are calculated in accordance with ASME B31.3 unless otherwise instructed.

An oval Ring Type Joint completely enclosed in a nitrile rubber coating. The metallic RTJ material is usually soft iron or low carbon steel.

  • Functions:
    • Used in pressure testing to minimize damage to flanges.
    • The rubber contact points provide additional seals while protecting the flange surfaces.
    • Increases assurance against corrosion that can occur between conventional RTJs and the engaged groove surfaces.
  • Availability: Wide range of standard sizes, with special sizes available upon request.

Style R and RX Ring Type Joints can be supplied with PTFE inserts, strategically placed to reduce turbulent flow and eliminate gasket/flange erosion. For RX style, the insert is specially designed with radially drilled pressure passage holes so that the self-energizing performance is not impaired. The insert is located between the inside diameter of the RTJ and the bore of the flange, completely trapped on assembly.

  • Benefits: Prevents fluid ingress in the annular space, mitigating corrosion/erosion in this sensitive area.

This specialized metallic RTJ design incorporates a primary RTJ geometry for the main metal-to-metal seal and an integrated secondary, highly conformable soft seal (e.g., restructured microcellular PTFE on a serrated metal core). This secondary seal is carefully dimensioned to fill any voids or crevices formed between the pipe-bore and the internal diameter of the standard RTJ on flange closure.

  • Benefits: The highly conformable secondary seal adapts to extensively damaged flange sealing surfaces, eliminating fluid ingress and preventing further corrosion/erosion in this critical area. This design can be used for damaged flanges or as re-usable RTJs (after replacing the soft facing).
  • Soft Sealing Materials: High-performance soft materials (such as flexible graphite or advanced PTFE compounds) can be applied to the serrated faces. Maximum operating temperatures depend on the metallurgy and facing material.
  • Compliance: The underlying metallic RTJ conforms to the dimensional requirements of the relevant API or ASME standard.
  • Applications: High-pressure applications where API or ASME ring groove style flanges are sealed, particularly for damaged flanges or as part of preventative maintenance programs.

A metallic gasket design incorporating spherical seating faces designed to suit a specific mating flange profile, providing a high-integrity, high-pressure/temperature metal-to-metal seal.

  • Materials: Material specified softer than the flange material. Standard carbon and stainless steel grades, with alternatives available.
  • Note: Dipti Metal requires a detailed drawing for non-standard Lens Rings as they are specific to DIN 2696.
